Coming in for surgery

We are always happy to discuss all the options and the pre and post-surgical expectations of your pet's operation with you and give as much information and peace of mind as we can. After you have decided to go ahead with the surgery, you will be referred to the nurse to book your pet for any pre-surgery procedures and the dates for the actual operation. We will explain a little more about what will happen during the procedure and you will receive an information sheet to help you prepare your pet (download a copy below).

Before your pet's surgery As part of your pets' preparation for surgery and to safeguard their well-being, we may carry out certain tests and even advise on some simple treatments, such as a a pre-operative wormer. Lungworm for example can reduce the body's blood clotting ability. We will also go through the other surgical services we offer which aid us to further limit to the risk of anaesthesia to your pet.
The day before your pet's surgery Please make sure your pet has
nothing to eat from the night before the surgery, and nothing to drink
in the morning of the surgery. The reduces the risk of your pet
vomiting during the anaesthetic. This does not apply to rabbits however, they can eat as normal. For more information please see sheets available as downloads above.
The day of your pet's surgery Your pet's time of arrival is usually arranged when booking the operation as we like to explain more about the procedure your pet is undergoing, go through the procedure consent form that you will need to sign for us to go ahead, and answer any questions you may have. Small animals should arrive in secure travel cages.
After your pet's surgery We will call you to let you know how your pet is after their surgery. Discharge times will be arranged for those pet's able to go home. This time is dependent on different factors, such as how well the patient is on waking up and whether you need to see the vet to discuss any medication and after care. You will be given a post-operative information sheet to help you care for your pet during their recovery at home. An appointment for a post-operative check up will also be booked.
Costs and payment Before any procedure we are happy to talk through
the details of the operation and give as much detail about cost that we can. We will always provide you with an individual costing for your pet's procedure. Sometimes additional, unforseen costs can arise during surgery, such as a longer than expected anaesthetic period may be needed, or extra medication required. May we gently remind you
that all procedures need to be paid for at the time of the surgery and some dental procedures may not be covered by your pet insurance. Read about payment here. We always recommend our pet owners have pet insurance to help with the cost of veterinary care.
During their stay
If your pet is staying with us for a while to recover from their surgery, you will be able to visit them. The nurse will arrange suitable appointment times with you.
We make every effort to make your pet's stay with us a warm, caring and comfortable experience. Your pet is a member of your family and we treat each one with respect and compassion. Having your pet come in for surgery can be a stressful time for your family as well as your pet. Your presence after an operation requiring a longer stay can often improve your pet's recovery and give your family peace of mind, so we do encourage you to arrange to visit to see your pet.
Making an appointment to visit We ask that you call us to arrange a visit to see your pet during their stay with us. This means we can ensure we are available to answer any questions you may have. The timing of your visit will be dependent on when the procedure is performed and when your pet will be ready to see you.
Please note that there
is always the chance that we are working with an emergency case in the
treatment and recovery area. if that is the case you
may be asked to to wait.
